How to Harden Asphalt Millings

When paving using asphalt, the installation usually involves a “hot mix” of asphalt that will be spread using special equipment. In contrast, asphalt milling is laid without the use of heat. This “cold mix” is laid and cured at an ambient outdoor temperature. The best way to finish it is to compact it with a steamroller. Once it has been properly compacted, the surface will harden over time.

Applicable Regulations

Comply with local regulations before you begin. Your community or HOA could limit or restrict your choices when it comes to asphalt or asphalt millings.

Prepare The Site

If you are building a new driveway on top of the soil, you must make sure it has been properly graded, so your driveway has good drainage. You have to make sure the water runs off to the sides of the driveway or to the bottom. Then, you will need to rent a drum roller compactor for a day and carefully drive it over the base soil, so it has been compacted uniformly. Cover this with some coarse, jagged gravel. Just make sure you use the proper road base mix to allow for drainage.

Leave this to settle for a few days. Letting it settle creates a stronger and more stable base for the asphalt milling and will allow you to see and correct any possible issues with the initial compaction. If you are paving over a pre-existing asphalt driveway, drive over the area and look for any areas where the asphalt is loose. As you will need to remove those loose pieces and then fill the areas in with gravel.
