Debunking Myths About Asphalt Paving

With all the conflicting information floating around today with regards to asphalt paving and its numerous characteristics, it is all too easy to get fact confused with fiction. So if you own a property it is important you have all of the right information pertaining to asphalt at your disposal. To help you, we at Hackney Paving & Construction have debunked some of the most common myths and misconceptions we have encountered over time.

Myth #1: Asphalt is More Expensive Than Concrete

Cutting corners with pavement installation and maintenance is never recommended, as it will always result in detrimental consequences further down the line. That being said, the cost of installing asphalt is on par with the cost of concrete installation. Asphalt is a lot easier and cheaper to maintain though, so you will actually end up saving money.

Myth #2: Asphalt and Concrete Are the Same

Contrary to popular belief, asphalt and concrete use different aggregates and production processes, which give them each their own unique qualities. The main difference between the two is with the binding agents. Asphalt mixes an aggregate with bitumen and the binding agent which gives it its signature black color. Concrete involves mixing stone aggregate with cement and leaving it to harden. That is what gives concrete its greyish color. Asphalt pavements and driveways are stronger and more resistant to exposure to external elements.

Myth #3: Asphalt Only Comes in One Colour

Most people are unaware of this, but it is possible to dye asphalt aggregates to match the aesthetic colors of the home or business. Colour additives are safe for the environment. And can be added to almost any hot or cold asphalt mixture. The standard black, however, is the most common color for asphalt pavements and driveways, but it is also available in earthy tones such as red, brown, green, dark grey, etc.
